Abstract

The East Java Provincial Library and Archives Office (Disperpusip Jatim) plays a strategic role as a public facility that supports the improvement of literacy and reading interest in the community, particularly among the younger generation in Surabaya. The number of visits to Disperpusip Jatim has remained relatively stable. However, in order to increase visitor numbers, it is necessary to not only consider visiting hours and collaboration with educational institutions, but also to address the evolving needs of library visitors. The target users of the library are multigenerational—ranging from toddlers to the elderly, including visitors with disabilities. Based on this, it is essential to design a library facility that is engaging, non-monotonous, interactive for early childhood users, and accessible to all. This project involves redesigning the interior of Disperpusip Jatim with the goal of not only meeting the functional needs of a reading space, but also offering a joyful, inspiring learning experience that aligns with the developmental characteristics of children and the needs of visitors with disabilities. The children's reading area is equipped with an indoor playground, a psychological clinic, and an interactive science zone, all of which are designed to appeal to both younger and older users. Interior design plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere and creating a lasting impression, which can in turn increase the likelihood of return visits. This study focuses on redesigning the first floor interior, with an emphasis on the children's reading area, using a Design Thinking approach that includes the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The Edu-Fun Learning concept is applied as the main strategy, integrating communicative and interactive design elements such as thematic zoning, a bright color palette, comfortable lighting, safe materials, and educational game-based features. The design results indicate that this concept successfully creates a more positive learning environment and enhances the spatial appeal for children. In the future, this design is expected to serve not only as an aesthetic and functional solution but also as a means of increasing visit frequency and reading interest among younger generations. The redesign contributes to transforming the library into an inclusive, adaptive, and user-relevant educational space.
