Abstract

In modern exhibition spaces, partitions serve not only as thematic dividers and content supports but also as acoustic elements that allow visitors to enjoy audio as part of a multimedia experience. Ideally, listening areas require acoustic isolation; however, spatial efficiency is often achieved through open booth configurations. This study explores the acoustic performance of three open booth models with variations in side partitions, aiming to assess their potential alignment with acoustic isolation principles. Objective assessments were conducted to map sound propagation and spatial acoustic characteristics, while intersubjective evaluations aimed to examine visitors’ perceptions of the acoustic environment. A mixed-method approach was employed—objectively through digital ray tracing simulations and impulse response (RIR) testing on full-scale (1:1) physical models, and intersubjectively through evaluations involving 60 respondents to gather insights into their perceptions of noise disturbance, sound clarity, focus, and acoustic comfort within a mock-up space. The results indicate that a side partition configuration with a width of 120 cm has the potential to achieve an optimum acoustic range. These findings support the theoretical development that open booths can be designed with measurable acoustic performance while remaining spatially efficient. This study offers theoretical contributions by broadening the understanding of acoustics in open exhibition spaces, advancing principles of isolation in room acoustics, reinforcing a methodologically applicable mixed-assessment approach, and provides practical guidance for designing exhibition spaces that balance spatial efficiency with acoustic quality.
