Abstract

Urban Heat Island is a major urban problem affecting comfort, air quality, and public health. From this phenomenon, comfort is certainly needed to prevent these problems, and in an effort to overcome this challenge, bioclimatic architecture offers a solution through the application of passive design principles that are in harmony with the local climate and environment. This principle will be applied to create a design that is thermally adaptable and contributes to minimizing the impact of UHI in the city of Malang. With a force-based framework that considers land climate factors, criteria for achieving comfort are obtained based on the principles of bioclimatic architecture. The initial steps taken were to search for bioclimatic architecture literature studies, then conduct precedent studies of previous designs that apply bioclimatic principles, and then collect mapping data to determine areas exposed to UHI, and from these results obtain local wind forces to determine the building design. The form of application of bioclimatic architecture in this rest area is in the form of cross ventilation openings and stack effects in the retail mass that are able to control winds in the building to optimize user comfort without using additional energy.
