Abstract

Currently, the energy transition is a reality on the way to achieving net-zero emissions. Among the various renewable energy technologies that have received significant attention, the construction of floating solar power (PV) plants is one option. One of the main reasons is the problem of land acquisition that can cause conflicts, while the use of water is more flexible. Therefore, the development of floating solar power plants located near the coast (later moved offshore) is promising, especially for surviving in harsh environments. This study aims to demonstrate the innovative design of floating structures with multi-hull hull types considered with a focus on the seakeeping performance of both bodies. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations based on the 3-D diffraction panel method along with the use of the JONSWAP wave spectrum were carried out to achieve seakeeping characteristics. The results show that the single-array pentamaran hull configuration has a stable motion response compared to the single-array catamaran, trimaran, and quadramaran hull configurations. In the multi-array hull configuration, the 2x5 hull configuration affects the motion response reduction compared to the single-array pentamaran. For the 3x5, 4x5 and 5x5 hull configurations, the response characteristics are the same for heave, roll and pitch movements in each wave direction with a reduction in the movement response value for each hull configuration.
