Abstract

This study developed a MATLAB-based simulation and optimization model for pump selection and placement in fluid distribution networks. The system was modeled as a steady-state pipe network consisting of six nodes and eleven pipes, combining both open- and closed-loop configurations. The nonlinear governing equations were derived from mass conservation and energy balance principles. The Newton-Raphson method was employed to iteratively solve for flow rates while accounting for pipe resistance and pressure boundary conditions. Head losses were calculated using the Darcy-Weisbach equation, and total dynamic head (TDH) was evaluated under different pump placement scenarios. Scenarios A and B compared centralized and distributed pumping schemes. Scenario A, involving three non-identical pumps placed at high-demand locations, achieved better hydraulic performance and reduced total power demand by up to 23% compared to the distributed configuration (Scenario B), which utilized four identical pumps operating in parallel. The model serves as a flexible tool for preliminary pump system design and supports decision-making in practical engineering applications.
