Abstract

In response to international regulations on energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission reduction set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), this study evaluates the performance of several types of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) — namely Mewis Duct, Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF), and Twisted Fins — applied to a 17,500 DWT Oil & Product Tanker. The research was conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations in ANSYS Fluent to model fluid flow around the ship hull and propeller. The simulations consisted of three main stages: Open Water Test, Resistance Test, and Self-Propulsion Test. Results showed that each ESD type had a distinct impact on propulsion efficiency, total resistance, and energy consumption. Among the tested configurations, the Mewis Duct demonstrated the highest efficiency improvement, followed by PBCF and Twisted Fins. These findings can serve as a reference for selecting optimal ESD technologies to enhance ship performance and support compliance with global maritime energy efficiency standards.
