Abstract

Multigenerational housing in Indonesia is a phenomenon that emerged from extended family structure as the concrete expression of culture. As a dwelling phenomenon, multigenerational housings are often found in elderly’s dwelling. The elderly's ownership of housing affects the nuclear family of middle generation to determine and control their privacy requirement in the house. The privacy needs are regulated and represented by four privacy mechanisms, that are verbal, non – verbal, culture, and environment. Environmental mechanism is expressed by spatial arrangement and architectural element design. This study explored the use of domestic space of each generation to identify domestic privacy in housing. A qualitative research strategy with a phenomenological approach is chosen to obtain data about the living experience, system of activities and system of settings, the use of space, and privacy needs. Data are collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and behavioral mapping. These methods are also used to reveal the relationship between the system of activity and the system of setting as aspects of the use of space. These systems represent the domestic privacy needs of each generation. This study indicates that the needs of home privacy for each generation are achieved through negotiation of space and activities that lead to flexible uses of domestic space. The nuclear family of the middle generation choose to carry out personal activities in public settings (guest room, living room, and porch), while the elderly concentrate most of their domestic activities in their private setting (bedroom). These situations expressed how each generations have different privacy mechanisms. The elderly prefers an open plan configuration and semi-fixed architectural features, thus verbal and non-verbal are the dominant of privacy mechanisms. On the other hand, the nuclear family of middle-generation requires private conditions to carry out personal activities, thus expressing their privacy mechanism through the architectural elements and spatial arrangements.
