Abstract

Criticism and theory are knowledge that closely relates to each other, which gives information and influences the design process. This understanding aligns with the design as drawing forth of an idea’s consideration as the conceptual basis of criticism by design. Discourse about Indonesian architecture identity has become restlessness that is still going, due to rapid global development. As an unfavorable quality and action, this restlessness can be framed as the substance of criticism that becomes knowledge of the design process. Indonesian architects tend to utilize self-subjectivity in their restlessness toward this issue, represented in their contemporary architecture design. This research focuses on interpreting Indonesian architects’ interpretive criticism with the substance of Indonesian architecture identity in the design process, represented in their contemporary architecture designs. Critical theory, as this research orientation applies a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The in-depth interview was conducted with five Indonesian architects based on set criteria. Content analysis through this primary data is conducted with the help of NVivo software, producing categories-subcategories. As the research result, a tree-map diagram is displayed based on the research concept-aspects, and a matrix table is employed for verification. This research uncovers these architects’ tendencies regarding the research discussion. The term’s inclination of Indonesian architecture identity’s substance is determined through form, scope, act, and object of identity, which is in terms of seeking more. The component of act and goal define the values’ tendency of criticism in architecture’s understanding which is in the subjective perspective of refinement’s value. This value leads to the category of interpretive criticism, which reveals the utilization of advocatory, evocative, and impressionistic criticism. Regarding the study of criticism by design, the inclination of this criticism employment is identified in defining the problem stage, which reflects the utilization tendency of interpretive criticism as an input in the design process. Materiality becomes architecture elements that these architects tend to apply, accommodating interpretive criticism with the substance of Indonesian architecture identity, represented in contemporary architecture designs in visual abstraction.
