Abstract

SC 46 cast steel is a cast steel that is difficult to harden. The hardness of the material before being hot-treated is 71.3 HRB. Based on the theory of cast material, the hardness can be increased through hot-treatment and is very difficult through other processes. Based on this theory, the author wants to know to what extent the hardness of SC 46 steel can be increased through hot-treatment. In this study, the heat-treatment process was carried out with various temperatures, namely on workpiece 1 with a temperature of 850 °C, workpiece 2 with a temperature of 980 °C, and workpiece 3 with a temperature of 1110 °C. The holding time was 40 minutes and the cooling medium was water. Then continued with hardness testing and metallographic observations. From the results of this study, it was found that: a temperature of 850 °C produced a maximum hardness of 102.4 HRB, while at a temperature of 980 °C it produced a hardness of 95.8 HRB, and at a temperature of 1110 °C it produced a hardness of 90.1 HRB. So, the most suitable temperature to achieve maximum hardness in this study is 850 °C
