Abstract
Baja AISI 4340 merupakan mayoritas baja yang paling banyak digunakan di dalam dunia industri sebagai bahan dari komponen komponen dengan profit melingkar seperti pulley, poros, roda gigi, cable drum, dan crankshaft journal. Untuk mendapatkan benda kerja dengan permukaan yang keras namun ulet pada bagian daam, flame hardening merupakan proses yang paling tepat untuk pengerasan lokal dari suatu benda kerja. Pemilihan metode spin hardening didasarkan pada profil dari benda kerja yang melingkar. Pada metode spin hardening pemanasan maupun pendinginan diakukan dengan kondisi benda kerja yang berputar. Proses pemanasan kemudian diikuti dengan pendinginan oleh nozzel air yang letaknya bersebelahan dengan burner. Faktor-faktor yang dapat mempengaruhi dimensi pengerasan adalah durasi serta intensitas pemanasan, laju pendinginan, dan kadar kandungan karbon dari baja. Pada penelitian kali ini dilakukan pembuatan mesin serta proses flame hardening metode spin terhadap baja AISI 4340. Proses flame hardening dilakukan dengan mengatur jarak burner ke benda kerja (1mm, 2mm, dan 3mm) dalam hubungannya terhadap intensitas pemanasan, serta mengatur sudut nozzle pendingin terhadap burner (40°, 50°, dan 60°) yang berhubungan dengan waktu tahan. Selanjutnya dilakukan pengujian kekerasan serta pengukuran terhadap dimensi yang meliputi kedalaman dan Iebar daerah yang mengalami pengerasan. Dari data, diketahui bahwa kombinasi antara jarak burner 2mm dan sudut pendinginan 60° menghasilkan kedalaman serta Iebar pengerasan yang optimal. Selain menghasilkan Iebar serta kedalaman pengerasan yang maksimal, kombinasi jarak burner 2mm dan sudut pendinginan 60° juga menunjukkan peningkatan nilai kekerasan yang paling besar, yaitu sekitar 49% dari material awal. AISI 4340 steel is the most widely used steel in the industrial world as a material for components with circular profiles such as pulleys, shafts, gears, cable drums, and crankshaft journals. To obtain a workpiece with a hard but ductile surface on the inside, flame hardening is the most appropriate process for local hardening of a workpiece. The selection of the spin hardening method is based on the profile of the circular workpiece. In the spin hardening method, heating and cooling are carried out with the workpiece rotating. The heating process is then followed by cooling by a water nozzle located next to the burner. Factors that can affect the hardening dimension are the duration and intensity of heating, the cooling rate, and the carbon content of the steel. In this study, the machine was made and the flame hardening process of the spin method was carried out on AISI 4340 steel. The flame hardening process was carried out by adjusting the distance of the burner to the workpiece (1mm, 2mm, and 3mm) in relation to the heating intensity, as well as adjusting the angle of the cooling nozzle to the burner (40°, 50°, and 60°) which is related to the holding time. Next, hardness testing and dimension measurements were conducted, including the depth and width of the hardened area. The data revealed that the combination of a 2mm burner distance and a 60° cooling angle produced optimal hardening depth and width. In addition to producing maximum hardening width and depth, the combination of a 2mm burner distance and a 60° cooling angle also demonstrated the greatest increase in hardness, approximately 49% compared to the initial material. Overall, the design of this flame hardening machine has demonstrated good performance
