Abstract

Forests have a role in the regulation of the carbon cycle and water cycle, as well as the presence of trees that are very important in the floristic structure and dynamics of the forest. Changes in the health and mortality of trees will certainly affect the function and structure of the forest. The causes of tree damage and mortality are very diverse, ranging from biotic factors such as fungi, lianas, insects; and also abiotic factors such as weather, temperature, humidity, etc. Therefore, this study aims to determine the percentage of dead individuals to the total number of individuals found, as well as to observe the risk factors that cause tree damage and mortality in the Sumber Pawon Forest, Kediri which is empowered as a water conservation area. Observations were made based on the Tree Mortality and Damage Protocol issued by ForestGEO, by observing the stand mode, crown illumination, liana infestation and the presence of fungi affecting tree wood. The results obtained showed that from a total 170 found, 6.47% of individual trees were damaged and died. Of the total 11 trees that died, 6 of them died in uprooted mode (U) and the remaining 5 died in broken mode (B). The process of tree damage and mortality that occurs episodically is thought to be caused by biotic factors such as lianas and fungi, and abiotic factors such as changes in weather, texture and soil moisture.
