Abstract

The development of digital image-based sensing technology allows for more efficient and accurate measurements of vegetation parameters. One important parameter in forestry studies is tree height, which is a primary indicator in estimating biomass and carbon content. In this study, a tree height estimation system using a stereo camera based on the principle of triangulation was developed. This method utilizes two images from different perspectives to obtain depth information (depth) by calculating the disparity between pairs of corresponding points. After the camera goes through intrinsic and extrinsic calibration processes, the three-dimensional coordinates of the top and bottom points of the tree can be calculated, resulting in an automatic tree height estimate. Tests were conducted on several tree objects with different lighting conditions and shooting distances. The results show that the stereo camera-based triangulation method is able to provide tree height estimates with a relatively small error rate compared to manual measurements, thus potentially being applied as an alternative to non-destructive measurements on a small field scale.
