Abstract

The construction of the Betung – Jambi Toll Road Section 1B (Betung – Tungkal Jaya) faces significant challenges due to soft soil with low bearing capacity, high compressibility, and low permeability. One of the main issues is the handling of embankments on soft soil, which is at risk of excessive and uneven settlement. Where the depth of the soft soil at the review site reaches 8 meters with the groundwater level at a depth of 0 meters, and a fill will be constructed on top of it with a height between 3 meters and 6 meters. The soil replacement method is commonly used to address this issue; however, it has several drawbacks. Soil replacement requires high costs for excavation and material replacement, along with significant environmental impacts, such as damage to material source locations and waste soil disposal problems. Furthermore, even with soil replacement, long-term settlement may still occur. The analysis results show that increasing the thickness of the replacement to 2.0 meters effectively reduces total settlement, but alone is not able to meet the requirements of the settlement rate limit of <2 cm/year and <10 cm/10 years. The use of the CAM system has proven to be superior because it is able to distribute the load more evenly and provides a delay effect. In addition, CAM significantly increases the safety factor to above 1.5, especially on lower embankments, and maintains the stability of differential settlement below the threshold of 0.3%. As a final solution to meet all technical criteria, a combination of CAM or replacement with the Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) method is required to accelerate the consolidation process.
