Abstract

Low literacy about healthy snacks among elementary school children makes them unable to distinguish between foods that are safe and those that pose a health risk. Children aged 9–12 years tend to choose snacks based on shape, color, and visual appeal, making them vulnerable to exposure to hazardous chemicals such as borax, formaldehyde, rhodamine B, and metanil yellow. This study aims to design educational media in the form of motion graphics explainer videos to increase elementary school children's knowledge about the dangers of snacks containing harmful chemicals. The video was designed by applying the principles of Multimedia Learning so that the information delivery is simple, structured, and in accordance with the cognitive capacity of children. The research methods included a literature study, observation at 30 elementary schools in the city of Surabaya, and interviews with experts from the East Java Health Office. The effectiveness of the media was evaluated through pre-test and post-test measurements of 4th–6th grade elementary school students. The user test results showed an increase in knowledge scores after students watched the explainer video, indicating that the designed media was effective as a means of educating elementary school children about snack safety.
