Abstract

The increasing use of drones in various fields such as logistics, environmental monitoring, and law enforcement has heightened the need for digital forensic capabilities to reconstruct events based on flight data. Drone log files such as DAT, TXT, LOG, and DEFAULT store critical artifacts including GPS coordinates, speed, altitude, and pilot control traces. However, the limitations of conventional forensic tools in handling proprietary formats and encryption on DJI devices hinder comprehensive investigations. This research aims to integrate the Drone Data Parser (DRDP) into iLEAPP, an open-source forensic platform, to expand its analytical coverage of drone artifacts. The proposed approach combines data from drone hardware and mobile controller applications such as DJI GO and DJI Fly to establish a holistic forensic analysis framework. This study also applies the CRC-64 method and data decryption to improve the accuracy of artifact parsing. Validation is conducted on several DJI drone models (Mavic Air, Mavic 2, Mavic 2 Enterprise, and Mavic 2 Pro) with supporting data from controller devices. The expected outcome is increased accuracy in drone forensic investigations, as well as enhanced iLEAPP capabilities in supporting digital artifact analysis within the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem specifically drones through an integrated approach that unifies hardware and software sources of artifacts.
