Abstract

Berdasarkan analisis ekonomi, diperoleh Total Capital Investment (TCI) sebesar Rp 2.979.105.913.947 dengan Net Present Value (NPV) sebesar Rp 3.872.582.084.271, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) sebesar 19%, Pay Out Time (POT) selama 3,40 tahun, dan Break Even Point (BEP) sebesar 23%.

The demand for sorbitol as a low-calorie sweetener, humectant, and raw material for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industries continues to increase in line with the growing trend of sugar-free products. This report aims to design a sorbitol plant with a capacity of 160,000 tons/year using glucose syrup as raw material through an efficient, sustainable, and industrially applicable catalytic hydrogenation process. The sorbitol production process consists of three units : Preparation Unit, Catalytic Hydrogenation Unit, and Purify Unit. In the Preparation Unit, glucose syrup is alkaline-treated using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to increase the reaction conversion, then heated and compressed to reactor operating conditions. Next, in the Catalytic Hydrogenation Unit, a mixture of glucose and hydrogen gas is reacted using a Raney-Nickel catalyst at 130°C and 34 atm of pressure, producing sorbitol as the primary product and maltitol as a byproduct. Finally, the Purify Unit includes pressure reduction, separation of hydrogen gas and NaOH, which are recycled into the process to improve raw material efficiency, and concentration of the solution using a vacuum evaporator to produce a high-grade sorbitol product that meets industrial quality standards. The plant is planned to be located in Gresik Regency, East Java Province, and will operate 330 days per year, taking into account the availability of raw materials, utilities, and land and sea transportation access. The plant design also considers process safety, energy efficiency, and waste reduction through the implementation of recycling flows. Based on the economic analysis, the Total Capital Investment (TCI) is IDR 2.979.105.913.947, with a Net Present Value (NPV) of IDR 3.872.582.084.271, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 19%, a Payout Time (POT) of 3,40 years, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 23%. Based on the technical and economic evaluation results, the proposed sorbitol plant is deemed feasible and has the potential to support the development of the sweetener industry and the application of chemical process technology in Indonesia.
