Abstract

Paper industries in Indonesia still play a strategic role, especially for Grade A paper products that require high stability and consistency in quality. PT XYZ, as one of the paper manufacturers, faces problems in the form of quality variations between paper machines that have the potential to cause instability in the production process, especially in the characteristics of Brightness and Color L, Color a, and Color b, which are correlated. This study aims to evaluate the stability and capability of Grade A paper production processes using a multivariate statistical quality control approach that can simultaneously monitor process variability and mean shifts. The data used is historical data on Grade A paper quality from five paper machines for the period July to September 2025. Process variability is monitored using the Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Variance (MEWMV) control chart, while process mean shifts are detected using the Spatial Signed Rank Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (SSRM) control chart, which is robust against distribution assumption. The results show that in several paper machines there are still observations that are outside the control limits, indicating process instability in terms of both variability and average. In addition, the process capability analysis results show that although some quality characteristics have demonstrated good precision and accuracy, overall the process is not yet fully capable of meeting the specified limits. Based on the Fishbone analysis and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), the main causes of color quality instability in Grade A paper are attributed to machine and human factors, with the highest improvement priority related to the absence of an early warning system from Quality Control and the slow operator response to process changes.
