Abstract

Tropical urban parks are green open spaces in densely populated areas with temperatures above 32°C that are becoming increasingly popular with the public. In addition to functioning as the lungs of the city with fresh air, tropical urban parks also provide a cool outdoor space with various facilities and attractive environmental designs. However, the problem is the increase in vandalism against park facilities due to a lack of management when visitors are active. This study aims to observe the forms of vandalism, identify visitor experiences, and recommend management strategies to reduce its impact in tropical urban parks. Previous studies have recommended two main approaches: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) theory and Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) theory. This study combines both approaches in a case study of tropical urban parks using a mixed method through three stages: observation, semi-structured qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis with SEM-PLS. The results show that cool park areas with high visitor density have a higher potential for vandalism. The main contributing factors include temperature, demographics, density, and vegetation design. SEM-PLS analysis shows that micro management (FBS) influences individual vandalism intentions, while macro management (CPTED) influences group vandalism intentions. Although visitors are generally not motivated to commit vandalism from the outset, weaknesses in problematic park management can trigger vandalism. These findings contribute to park managers, academics, and practitioners in formulating strategies to reduce the impact of vandalism in tropical urban parks.
