Abstract

The rapid development of infrastructure in Indonesia has encouraged the implementation of more efficient construction methods, both in terms of time and cost. In reinforced concrete structural works such as Box Underpasses and Box Culverts, the commonly used construction method is the cast in situ method, where concrete casting is performed directly at the project site. This method offers flexibility in execution; however, it requires a relatively long construction time, extensive formwork, and a high dependency on site conditions and labor availability. As an alternative, the precast method provides a construction system using precast elements produced off-site under better quality control, which are then transported and assembled on-site through an erection process. This study aims to analyze and compare the cast in situ and precast methods for Box Underpass and Box Culvert works in the Probolinggo–Banyuwangi Toll Road Project Package 3B Zone 3 based on time and cost aspects. The research method employed is quantitative analysis using secondary data, including design drawings, work volume data, equipment and labor productivity, and project cost data. The project duration was calculated using Microsoft Project software, while the cost estimation was prepared based on itemized work analysis for each method. The analysis results indicate that, based on the overall project schedule, the cast in situ method has a total construction duration of approximately 465 days, whereas the precast method has a total duration of approximately 402 days, showing that the precast method provides a shorter construction time. This time reduction is mainly due to the decreased number of on-site work stages, as reinforcement, formwork, and casting processes are replaced by off-site fabrication of precast elements and on-site erection. In terms of cost, the cast in situ method results in a total construction cost of IDR 246,269,042,530.94, while the precast method requires a total cost of IDR 366,915,983,749.34. Thus, the precast method incurs higher costs compared to the cast in situ method, with a cost difference of IDR 120,646,941,218.40. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the precast method is superior in terms of construction time, whereas the cast in situ method is more economical in terms of cost for this project.
