Abstract

Mining activity is considered as one of the high-risk business activities for occupational safety and the environment. One of the high-risk mining activities is overburden dumping to disposal. This activity will form slopes that potentially lead to failure. Factors that affect slope stability must be considered in planning, implementation, and after the disposal is formed. Many sensors for risk control are installed to monitor disposal stability such as inclinometer, extensometer, GPS monitoring receiver, and robotic total station. However, the problems such as limited monitoring area coverage, high investment cost, and instruments security risk area remains. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has gained attention in recent years for mapping surface deformation. This study successfully applied the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) InSAR method using Sentinel-1A images to monitor deformation in a disposal area owned by PT Adaro Indonesia from January to July 2022. Time-series analysis revealed both uplift and subsidence during the observation period. Deformation rates identified by TS-InSAR and GPS showed an uneven distribution, with significant deformation concentrated in the HW12 disposal area. A comparison between InSAR and GPS data yielded a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 3,5 cm and a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0,83, indicating a strong correlation despite the moderate accuracy of InSAR.
