Abstract
Periode usia 4–6 tahun merupakan fase penting dalam perkembangan sosial emosional anak, ketika kemampuan mengenali, memahami, dan mengekspresikan emosi mulai berkembang dengan pesat. Meskipun demikian, literasi emosional masih kurang mendapatkan perhatian dalam lingkungan PAUD/TK sehingga anak sering mengalami kesulitan dalam mengenali enam emosi dasar, yaitu senang, sedih, marah, takut, terkejut, dan jijik. Media visual seperti buku cerita memiliki potensi besar dalam membantu proses pembelajaran emosi karena mampu menghadirkan pengalaman konkret melalui ilustrasi ekspresif, warna cerah, serta narasi yang dekat dengan keseharian anak. Penelitian ini bertujuan merancang sebuah buku cerita yang dapat membantu anak usia 4–6 tahun mengenali emosi dasar melalui pendekatan visual dan naratif yang sesuai dengan tahap perkembangan kognitif mereka. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif berbasis design research yang meliputi identifikasi masalah, pengumpulan data, analisis, sintesis ide, pengembangan konsep visual, pembuatan prototipe, dan evaluasi desain. Data primer diperoleh melalui observasi perilaku anak usia 4–6 tahun serta wawancara dengan guru PAUD, psikolog perkembangan anak, dan orang tua. Data sekunder dikumpulkan melalui literatur mengenai teori perkembangan kognitif Piaget, teori emosi dasar Ekman, literasi emosional, dan prinsip desain media untuk anak usia dini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa anak memiliki ketertarikan visual yang tinggi terhadap ilustrasi berwarna cerah, ekspresi wajah yang jelas, dan alur cerita yang sederhana. Meskipun demikian, beberapa emosi seperti marah lebih sulit dikenali sehingga diperlukan penguatan visual dan konteks cerita yang lebih eksplisit. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, prototipe buku cerita “Dio dan Mimi” dirancang dengan menekankan ekspresi karakter, penggunaan warna cerah, tata letak yang ramah anak, dan narasi yang mudah diikuti. Buku cerita ini diharapkan dapat menjadi media pembelajaran alternatif yang mendukung literasi emosional sekaligus memberikan pengalaman membaca yang menyenangkan.

Children aged 4–6 experience a crucial developmental period in which emotional awareness begins to form, including the ability to recognize, understand, and express basic emotions. However, emotional literacy often receives limited attention in early childhood education, which results in children having difficulties identifying six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. Visual storytelling media offers significant potential for supporting emotional learning because it can present concrete experiences through expressive illustrations, bright colors, and narratives that relate to children’s daily lives. This study aims to design a storybook that helps children aged 4–6 recognize basic emotions through visual and narrative approaches that align with their cognitive development. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design research method consisting of problem identification, data collection, data analysis, idea synthesis, visual concept development, prototyping, and design evaluation. Primary data were collected through observation of children aged 4–6 and interviews with preschool teachers, child psychologists, and parents. Secondary data were obtained from literature on Piaget’s cognitive development theory, Ekman’s basic emotion theory, emotional literacy, and design principles for children’s educational media. The findings indicate that children show a strong visual response to bright colors, clear facial expressions, and simple storylines. However, certain emotions such as anger are more difficult for children to recognize, which suggests the need for clearer visual representation and stronger narrative context. Based on these findings, the prototype storybook “Dio and Mimi” was developed with expressive characters, child-friendly layouts, vivid color palettes, and straightforward narratives. This storybook is expected to serve as an effective alternative medium to support emotional literacy and provide an enjoyable reading experience for young children.
