Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of green-synthesized silver nanoparticle (AgNP) layers on surface resonance characteristics in a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor based on a BK7 prism coated with a gold thin film in order to enhance sensitivity. AgNPs were synthesized using water hyacinth cellulose as a reducing and stabilizing agent, with 2% and 5% NaOH pretreatments applied to vary the cellulose isolation process. FTIR characterization revealed the presence of -OH functional groups, indicating the involvement of hydroxyl groups in the reduction of Ag⁺ ions to Ag⁰. Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) results showed that AgNPs synthesized with 2% NaOH exhibited smaller particle sizes and a narrower size distribution compared to those synthesized with 5% NaOH. This finding was supported by UV-Vis spectrophotometry results, which displayed absorbance peaks in the wavelength range of 430-450 nm, confirming the formation of silver nanoparticles. The AgNP layers were subsequently deposited onto the gold film surface using a spray-coating method with variations in the number of coating layers up to five layers for each sample. SPR measurements were performed using the Kretschmann configuration. The SPR curves indicated that AgNPs synthesized with 2% NaOH produced sharper and more stable resonance dips up to the third layer, whereas AgNPs synthesized with 5% NaOH exhibited broader dips and increased noise due to larger particle sizes and a higher tendency toward agglomeration. The shift in SPR angle (ΔθSPR) increased with the number of deposited layers, with smaller shifts observed for AgNPs 2% and larger shifts for AgNPs 5%. These differences are attributed to variations in the ability of each layer to enhance surface electron oscillations and the degree of nanoparticle layer homogeneity. Therefore, this study demonstrates that modification of the gold film with green-synthesized AgNPs significantly affects the position and quality of the SPR curve. AgNPs synthesized with 2% NaOH provide a more stable resonance response, while AgNPs synthesized with 5% NaOH produce larger angular shifts but with reduced curve quality.
