Abstract

Since the 1973 energi crisis caused by conflicts in Middle Eastern Countries, industrial societies—particularly in the West—have become increasingly aware of the importance of diversifying electricity sources to achieve energi independence and reduce reliance on major producers that control the supply and price of petroleum. One alternative energy source is the conversion of ocean currents into electrical power. However, ocean currents in Indonesia are generally reported to have low velocities, making the selection of suitable turbines a significant challenge. This study aims to examine the compatibility of ocean current turbine specifications with the characteristics of the Haya Strait, Maluku. The method employed involves modelling current velocity with software QGIS, ArcGIS, Delft Dasboard, Delft3D with reference to data from measurement reports at the location from secondary data from other researchers that was validate using RMSE, MAE, MBE, MAPE, and SMAPE. Second method is literature review with decision making of various ocean current turbine criteria as power, energy, cut-in, cut-off and dimension, which are then analyz with Haya strait marine conditions. The characteristics assessed include current velocity and depth of ocean. These data were obtained from measurement reports provided by other reseacher that validated. The expected outcome of this study is a recommendation of turbine types that are suitable for operation in the specified region. The compatibility between turbine specifications and local marine conditions is intended to serve as a technical reference for future development of renewable energy from ocean currents in the area.
