Abstract

From the perspective of Architectural Phenomenology, spaces is regarded as surpassing basic visual objectively. Instead, it acts as an atmospheric medium that can make human emotion and experiences. Based on this idea, this final project sees at how architecture can translate grief often regarded as an invisible, universal emotion into a real experience in space. The design framework integrates the phenomenological theories of Juhani Pallasmaa and Peter Zumthor with psychological frameworks, notably Kubler-Ross’s Five stage of grief and Stroebe and Schut’s Dual Process Model. This synthesis is used to make a deep spatial scene. The trajectory of spatial experience modifies the emotional narrative of the film Critical Eleven (2017), converting it into an architectural sequence that includes the stages of denial, anger, depression and acceptance. The design method focuses on changing the atmosphere by using massive concrete materiality, spectral lighting and acoustic qualities to establish sensory isolation. The architecture serves more than just its basic purposes, it mediates the link between the grieving self and the reality of loss through important locations like The Voids, The Chaos, and The Mirror of Restoration.
