Abstract

Emerging from the theory of atmospheric architecture, this project views architecture not merely as a functional form, but as a medium for creating experiental and emotional atmosphere inspired by human expression. The relationship between architecture and music plays a crucial role in this design exploration. Although composed on different medias, both architecture and music share similar structural elements and possess the ability to evoke emotions. Therefore, music is used as a medium for artistic interpretation and conceptual expression. Rock music, often perceived as aggressive and noisy, reveals a depth of lyrical meaning and emotional intensity beneath its surface. This project applies Plowright’s Concept-Based Design Framework to translate the character of rock music into architectural design criteria for a contemporary library—a typology traditionally associated with silence, focus, and neutral atmosphere. Rather than resolving the tension between the emotional turbulence of rock music and the calmness of a library, the design embraces their coexistence to generate a new spatial experience and respond to the challenges faced by libraries in the digital era. This contemporary library presents solitude as a form of comfort while simultaneously channeling the rebellious energy of rock music through atmospheric design. The space invites users not only to understand, but also to feel and actively engage with the atmosphere derived from rock music.

Berangkat dari teori arsitektur atmosferik, proyek ini memandang arsitektur bukan sekedar sebagai bentuk fungsional tetapi sebagai pencipta atmosfer pengalaman dan emosi yang terinspirasi dari ekspresi manusia. Hubungan antara arsitektur dengan musik juga memainkan peran penting dalam eksplorasi desain ini. Meskipun tersusun dari elemen-elemen yang berbeda, arsitektur dan musik tersusun dari struktur yang mirip, serta keduanya memiliki kemampuan untuk membangkitkan emosi. Oleh karena itu, musik digunakan sebagai medium untuk interpretasi dan ekspresi artisik terkait konsep. Musik rock, yang sering dipresepsikan agresif dan berisik, di balik permukaannya menyimpan kedalaman lirik dan emosi yang kuat. Proyek ini menerapkan Concep-Based Design Framework milik Plowright untuk mentranslasi musik rock ke dalam kriteria desain arsitektur perpustakaan kontemporer—sebuah tipologi yang secara tradisional diasosiasikan dengan keheningan, fokus, dan atmosfer yang netral. Alih-alih menyelesaikan ketegangan antara gejolak emosional musik rock dengan ketenangan perpustakaan, desain ini justru merangkul koeksistensi keduanya untuk menciptakan pengalaman pengguna yang baru dan menjawab isu-isu perpustakaan di era digital. Perpustakaan kontemporer ini menghadirkan kesendirian sebagai tempat penghiburan sekaligus menyalurkan energi pemberontak musik rock lewat desain atmosferik. Ruang ini mengajak pengguna untuk tidak hanya memahami, tapi juga merasakan dan terlibat secara aktif dalam atmosfir yang diciptakan dari musik rock.
