Abstract

Non-referential architecture, architecture is positioned as an autonomous entity that generates meaning through formal qualities and compositional relationships between elements, without relying on the representation of external values such as history or culture. This perspective becomes contrasting when confronted with the Tunjungan Street Corridor, which has developed as both a historic and commercial corridor, where the fusion of these identities is often expressed through façade renewals and the addition of signage elements. This fusion produces a disruption of visual hierarchy, manifested in overlapping elements, broken rhythms, high contrast, and fragmentation. Consequently, the Tunjungan Street Corridor has acquired a new identity as a corridor dominated by visual imagery. Within this context, the design is developed through a non-referential architectural approach by proposing contemplative space as a medium. In addition, Gestalt visual theory is employed as a parameter to examine and operationalize visual aspects, so that the resulting experience can move beyond image-making and evoke a contemplative atmosphere through the act of seeing.
