Abstract

Hostile architecture refers to design elements that regulate behavior through spatial means in order to deter presence, use, or occupation at the moment of interaction. Common examples include benches segmented by armrests to prevent lying down, spikes embedded in ledges or thresholds, and sloped surfaces that discourage rest. This final project explores the antithesis of hostile architecture through the lens of architecture of difference, applying Hegel’s dialectical method and the concept of bildung as a critical framework. Rather than addressing exclusion through direct opposition, the project investigates how architecture can reframe spatial exclusion through conceptual transformation. Hostile architecture is positioned as a thesis: a system of spatial control emerging from the perceived threat of “spatial invasion.” Its antithesis is developed through an examination of the thesis’ origin, including its history, logic, facts, and existing laws. From this exploration, the antithesis is not defined as negation, but as a shift in premise, where architecture becomes a field of negotiation. Using an adapted concept-based design framework, this shift is translated into architectural terms. Spatial ambiguity emerges as the primary design principle and is materialized through architectural moments such as thresholds and entrances, atrium or central void, circulation spine, retail and display areas, niches, service routes, and rooftop spaces. These moments allow hospitality and hostility to coexist within the same spatial conditions. Engaging the context of Manggarai, Jakarta, the project takes the form of a speculative commercial and gathering complex that operates as a discursive spatial object.
