Abstract

The transverse structural section in the cargo hold area of a tanker ship plays a crucial role in ensuring structural strength, operational safety, and construction efficiency. In practice, tanker structural designs are generally conservative, which can lead to excessive material usage and increased structural weight. Therefore, this study applies a topology optimization method combined with the finite element method to optimize material distribution in the midship cargo hold structure of a tanker ship while complying with the classification requirements of the Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI). The structural model is developed using solid elements and analyzed under extreme operational loading conditions. The optimization results indicate that critical structural areas, such as the floor and transverse deck, must be retained, whereas non-critical areas, including stiffeners attached to plates, side transverse members, and transverse bulkheads, allow for material reduction. The most optimal optimized design achieves a structural weight reduction of 28.67% compared to the existing design, while the maximum tegangan and deformation values remain within acceptable safety limits. This study demonstrates that topology optimization is an effective approach for guiding the design of lighter, more efficient tanker ship structures that continue to meet applicable safety standards.
