Abstract

Several polymer materials such as PMMA, PVA, and PDMS exhibit distinct advantages, including transparency and refractive index for PMMA, sensitivity for PVA, and flexibility for PDMS. However, the contribution of these three polymers in a blended polymer system requires comprehensive investigation to achieve a thourough understanding of the characteristic of the resulting polymer blends. This study aims to examine the effect of compotition variation in PMMA/PVA/PDMS polymer blends on their optical properties, chemical interactions, microstructure, and light transmission mechanism of the material. In addition, this research seeks to evaluate the optical property characteristic and light transmission behavior of the polymer blends as optical material for light propagation in plastic optical fiber. The polymer blends were prepared with PMMA as the base material, followed by the addition of PVA and PDMS fractions to form PMMA/PVA/PDMS compositions of 90/5/5, 80/10/10, 70/15/15, 80/5/15, 80/15/5, 70/10/20, and 70/20/10 (wt%). Characterization techniques employed in this study included UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, and light transmission measurement. The results indicate that variations in polymer blend composition significantly influence the optical properties, chemical interactions, and microstructure of resulting material. Furthermore, the light propagation mechanism within the polymer blends can be identified based on their absorption and transmission behavior, as well as the measured optical loss. Loss measurements reveal that different polymer blend compositions produce distinct light transmission characteristics, particularly in the visible region. The PMMA/PVA/PDMS polymer blends exhibit relatively high loss values across all compositions. However, pure PMMA and the blend with a composition of 70/20/10 show relatively lower average loss values of 0,71 and 3,59 dB, respectively. The optical band gap (
