Abstract

The maritime industry is currently under increasing global pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This effort is reflected in the implementation of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) regulation by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This study aims to evaluate the operational performance, fuel consumption, and carbon intensity of the passenger vessels KM Ciremai and KM Dobonsolo, as well as to assess the impact of repowering measures on improving ship energy efficiency. Both vessels examined in this study have exceeded their economic operational lifetimes, with KM Ciremai operating for 34 years and KM Dobonsolo for 33 years. This research analyzes the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) performance of KM Dobonsolo and KM Ciremai as a basis for operational decision-making in support of maritime decarbonization policies. The methodology includes an assessment of existing CII performance, trend analysis of projected CII rating degradation, and simulations of operational speed optimization. The results indicate that in 2025, KM Dobonsolo achieved a CII rating of category D with a Required CII value of 22.77, approximately 2.5% worse than KM Ciremai, which achieved a category C rating with a Required CII value of 22.22. Long-term projections reveal a continuous decline in CII ratings for both vessels as they age, leading to increased fuel consumption and carbon intensity. KM Ciremai is projected to reach a CII rating of category E during the period 2029–2035, while KM Dobonsolo is expected to reach category E during 2031–2035. Simulation results demonstrate that optimizing operational speed to 18 knots can reduce annual fuel consumption by approximately 31.5% for KM Dobonsolo and 29.0% for KM Ciremai. The findings confirm that operational speed optimization is an effective strategy for reducing emissions and slowing the deterioration of CII ratings.
