Abstract

Education is a basic right of every child, including children with disabilities, but their graduation rate in Indonesia is still relatively low. One of the causes is the limited educational facilities, especially special schools, which do not meet the standards of comfort, accessibility, and inclusive sensory needs. SLB Bhakti Luhur Malang is a real example of this problem, where interior design tends to only emphasize functional accessibility aspects such as ramps and handrails, but has not fully integrated the principles of universal design or the sensory needs of children with special needs. This study aims to redesign the interior of SLB Bhakti Luhur Malang with the concept of Fun Universal Design and an inclusive sensory approach. The concept of Fun Universal Design was chosen to combine the fulfillment of accessibility needs with fun elements that can improve the comfort and quality of the learning experience. The inclusive sensory approach is applied because children with disabilities, especially deaf, mentally retarded, and autism, have high sensory sensitivity and therefore require a learning environment that is safe, comfortable, and appropriate to their characteristics. The method used is design thinking with the principle of user-centered design, which allows the design to continue to develop according to user needs through the stages of empathy, problem definition, ideation, and prototyping. The resulting design produces an interior concept that not only focuses on universal accessibility but also considers visual, auditory, and tactile aspects to create an inclusive and enjoyable learning experience. Therefore, this research is expected to make a tangible contribution to improving the quality of education for children with special needs and serve as a reference for the development of interior design for special needs schools in Indonesia.
