Abstract

Occupational health and safety are an important issue in the minig industry. The International Labor Organization (ILO) records that the mining industry is the biggest contributor to work accidents that result in workers being injured or even passed away. It was recorded that 2.4 million workers died and 79% of the data come from the mining sector. It is estimated that material losses such as care, treatment, and compensation payments due to death/disability reach 4% of global net income per capita. In Indonesia, based on data from Indonesian Mining Association (ASPINDO), the total number of mining accidents in Indonesia in 2018 was 116 (47 people with minor injuries, 52 seriously injured, and 17 people died). To reduce the rate of work accidents, every element in the company must adhere to a safety culture. This study aims to contribute to the development of a model of factors that can affect safety performance and provide recommendations for improvement to the management of nickel mining and processing company in improving safety performance in the industry. Data was collected by distributing online questionnaires to employees. The number of respondents involved was 254 respondents. Based on data conducted using the Structural Equation Model (SEM) method, it was found that institutional aspects have a positive influence on safety leadership. Safety leadership has a positive influence on safety attitude, safety climate, and safety culture. For the safety climate has a positive influence on safety culture. Safety attitude and safety climate have a positive influence on safety performance. Safety culture does not have a positive influence on safety performance.Safety attitude have a positive influence on safety climate. Meanwhile, safety attitude does not have a positive influence on safety culture. Therefore, the research results can be used as input for the company to continue to improve the safety performance of the company.
