Abstract

Environmental issues have become a primary concern lately. Various technologies have been developed to obtain energy savings, one of which is the use of Energy Saving Devices (ESD). One type of ESD commonly used to save energy is the addition of a Pre-Swirl Stator (PSS) on the ship's hull. The purpose of the Pre-Swirl Stator (PSS) installation is to regulate the flow before entering the propeller to produce a direction opposite to the propeller rotation. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding PSS on the performance of the KP-505 propeller on the Kriso Container Ship (KCS). The research was conducted using CFD-based simulation with the support of NUMECA Fine Marine software. Diverse variations of PSS were developed based on the number of stator blades and the position of the stator blades to determine the relationship between the effect of additional resistance due to PSS and an increase in the Propulsive Coefficient (PC) and a decrease in power need / Delivered Horse Power (DHP). The results of the CFD simulation are verified and validated with the results of the EFD test or experiments from the towing tank test so that valid simulation results can be obtained. The results showed that the configuration of the asymmetric type of PSS model gave better results than the symmetric type. The highest PC number is on PSS_4PS with an increase in PC of 12.8%, but the best power loss is on PSS_3PS with a power-saving of 8.2%. Although PSS_4PS increases the PC number the best, the additional resistance generated is also large enough that it cannot provide the best power savings. So the installation of PSS on ships is very important to consider the increase in PC value and additional resistance due to the stator blades.
