Abstract

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a fuel that has an important role in human life. In Indonesia, most of the use of LPG is found as a source of energy in households and industry. The increasing demand for LPG has encouraged the development of LPG cargo handling facilities, Terminal LPG Semarang is one of them. The truck loading arm (TLA) venting system is one of piping systems in Terminal LPG Semarang. This system functions to distribute LPG vapor in the operational procedure of releasing the remaining LPG in TLA through a compressor to the storage tank. However, the compressor that has been installed often fails to transfer LPG vapor, so that the flow fails which leads to manual release of LPG to the environment. In this research, it is studied about the flow characteristics based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), analysis of LPG vapor pressure on variations in temperature, pressure drop, flow capacity, and compressor power required in the scenario of the number of operating TLAs. The results of the analysis show that under optimal operating conditions, the minimum flow capacity required is 0.0511 m3/s with minimum compressor power of 34.81 kW at 75% polytropic efficiency.
