Abstract

This project delves into the dynamic evolution of popular music, influenced by cultural and technological advancements, by examining the shifting sonic characteristics of commercially successful tracks. The project aims to analyse a large dataset of highly popular songs from Spotify, specifically investigating how their quantifiable audio characteristics have transformed across different release eras. The primary objective is to identify notable shifts in the soundscape of hit music, which will be achieved by filtering for popular tracks, conducting temporal analysis of their audio features, and employing various visualisations such as line charts, box plots, and 3D plots. This investigation aims to provide valuable insights into mainstream musical tastes, production trends, and the cyclical nature of popular sound, all while operating under the assumption that Spotify's popularity score accurately reflects a track's widespread appeal.

Proyek ini menyelami evolusi dinamis musik populer yang dipengaruhi oleh kemajuan budaya dan teknologi, dengan meneliti perubahan karakteristik sonik dari lagu-lagu yang sukses secara komersial. Proyek ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dataset besar lagu-lagu yang sangat populer dari Spotify, secara khusus menyelidiki bagaimana karakteristik audio yang dapat diukur telah berubah di berbagai era perilisan. Tujuan utamanya adalah untuk mengidentifikasi pergeseran yang signifikan dalam lanskap suara musik hit, yang akan dicapai dengan menyaring lagu-lagu populer, melakukan analisis temporal terhadap fitur audio mereka, serta menggunakan berbagai visualisasi seperti line chart, box plot, dan plot 3D. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan wawasan yang berharga mengenai selera musik arus utama, tren produksi, serta sifat siklus dari suara musik populer, dengan tetap beroperasi di bawah asumsi bahwa skor popularitas Spotify secara akurat mencerminkan daya tarik luas suatu lagu.
