Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis are pathogenic bacteria that can cause diseases in humans, such as urinary tract infections (UTI) and pneumonia. The use of antibacterials in the long term can cause bacteria to experience resistance to antibacterials, causing the effectiveness of antibacterials to decrease, so it is necessary to search for new antibacterial agents. In this study, the Japanese Frangipani flower (Adenium obesum) was extracted using the maceration method with distilled water, ethyl acetate, ethanol and acetone as solvents. Phytochemically, it is known that the Cambodian Japanese flower extract (A. obesum) contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids and glycosides that have the potential as antibacterial. The aquades extract of Japanese Frangipani flowers showed the largest diameter of the inhibition zone with an average inhibition zone of 12.50 ± 2.10 mm and an Inhibitory Concentration 50 (IC50) value of 475,15 mg/mL against P. aeruginosa bacteria and 56.99 mg/mL against E. faecalis. In this study, it can be concluded that the Japanese Frangipani flower extract (A. obesum) has potential as an antibacterial against P. aeruginosa and E. faecalis.
