Abstract
Synthesis and characterization of chitosan starch-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) with the addition of glutaraldehyde concentration has been successfully. The SAP synthesis was carried out on the same composition of chitosan:starch:glutaraldehyde 1:1:1 with a different concentration of each solution. The concentration of chitosan solution was 2% (w/v), starch 2% (w/v) with the addition glutaraldehyde concentration of 2% - 25% (v/v). Determination of the optimum condition for SAP was carried out by testing the absorption capacity as swelling (%) of the aquadest absorbate. The absorption method is cutting the SAP sample into small pieces and soaking it in 10 mL of distilled water for 10 minutes. The optimum conditions for SAP were obtained at a concentration of 5% (v/v) glutaraldehyde with an absorption capacity of 349,68%, then the optimum conditions for SAP were applied in NaCl and MgCl2 solutions at the same concentration of 0,9% (w/v) with a capacity absorption of 121,37% and 138,59%, respectively. The characterization test was carried out under the optimum conditions of SAP with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) instruments. Based on the results of the FTIR test, there was no interaction between starch and glutaraldehyde. However, the interaction between chitosan and glutaraldehyde resulted in an imine (C=N).
