Abstract

Population growth in Indonesia has led to an increase in the consumption of electrical energy, especially in the household sector. Most power plants in Indonesia currently still use fossil fuels, so the increase in electricity consumption will trigger an increase in fossil fuel consumption. Anticipation must be done immediately because the large release of carbon dioxide compounds due to increased consumption of fossil fuels will magnify the adverse effects of global warming. Thus, efforts are needed to minimize the consumption of electrical energy in the household sector. The largest consumption of electrical energy in the household sector is to operate the air conditioner so that efforts to condition the thermal comfort of the room to reduce the operating time of the air conditioner can be made. This can be realized through building energy retrofitting, especially in middle-low income households. Retrofitting is an effort to achieve savings in electrical energy consumption in a dwelling. That way, middle-low income people will be greatly helped in saving expenses. In this study, retrofitting was carried out by applying Phase Change Material on the inner surface of the residential wall. PCM is expected to be able to inhibit the rate of heat transfer that occurs in the walls of the building. This study used 3 types of PCM, namely Capric Acid, n-Eicosane, and P116. This research was conducted based on a simulation using the Computational Fluid Dynamics method, using ANSYS R18.1 software. After the simulation, it was found that the largest decrease in indoor temperature was when applying PCM type Capric Acid, that is, with a decrease in the average indoor temperature of 2,542oC. After that, a cost-benefit analysis was carried out to calculate the difference in electricity consumption before retrofitting and after retrofitting. Based on the cost-benefit analysis, in several variations of retrofitting, the savings in electricity consumption of 230.4 kWh are obtained so that the savings in electricity consumption costs are obtained with the savings rate based on the inflation value of 1.87%.
