Abstract

The average electricity demand in Indonesia grows by 7% per year. NRE can be used as a power plant to support the growth of electricity demand, especially ocean currents because the current speed in Indonesia reaches 0.5 m/s to 1.0 m/s. This ocean current energy can be utilized using a VAWT turbine, the Darrieus turbine. The Darrieus turbine has poor self-start capability, so a flow disturbance is used, which acts as a flow disturbance. In this study, the turbine is placed on the FA Well Tripod Platform PT PHE ONWJ by utilizing the platform foot as a flow disturbance. The research was conducted using the Computational Fluid Dynamics 2D method using the Ansys Fluent 2022 software. The best placement location is at section 2, point B platform with a speed of 0.64 m/s and point C platform with a speed of 0.58 m/s. The variation used is the vertical distance between the center of the turbine and the center of the platform foot, y/D 0.0, 0.05, and 0.1 at speeds of 0.64 m/s and 0.58 m/s. From the 2D simulation results, it is found that laying the turbine with a distance of y/D 0.0 at a speed of 0.64 m/s gives a tremendous torque increase, which is 13% compared to a conventional Darrieus turbine. The torque is then converted and obtained power of 80.81 Watt and energy of 707.9 kWh, which can be used as an alternative energy source on FA Well Tripod Platform PT PHE ONWJ.
