Abstract

The development of technology has led to an increasing dependence on electricity, which in turn increases the electrical load on power systems. Therefore, an optimization technique is required to regulate power generation operations efficiently. Economic dispatch is a power system optimization method used to determine the power output of each generating unit to minimize total generation costs. As civilization develops, power demand is distributed across different areas where generation capacity may not always meet local demand. To fulfill the power demand across different regions, Multi-Area Economic Dispatch (MAED) is utilized, considering transmission line capacity and power losses. The integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind power plants, and technical generator constraints, such as prohibited operating zones, are critical factors to consider in future power system planning. In this final project, the MAED problem is solved for an IEEE 30-Bus system modified into two generation areas, including wind power generation. The system is optimized by considering prohibited operating zones and generation uncertainty. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is employed as the optimization algorithm to solve this non-linear problem.
