Abstract

Since human feet bear body weight, they play a crucial role in daily life activities. There is a correlation between the growth in body mass during pregnancy and changes in foot dimensions, which can increase the joint strain on the systems of the body. The center of pressure (COP) and lower extremity kinematics can identify the effects of the increase in joint load on the postural balance of pregnant women and walking balance. A system utilizing the FSR interlink 402 pressure sensor and the combined sensor accelerometer ADXXL335 - gyroscope ENC-03RC computed by the STM32F10C8T6 microcontroller is therefore offered. The position and deviation of the center of pressure (COP) as well as the walking phase of pregnant women were determined using pressure sensor data collected from the toe, first metatarsal (M1), fifth metatarsal (M5), and heel of the foot. While the angle sensor data from the thigh, shin, and foot portions will be used to identify the kinematics of the lower extremities, including the knee joint parameters and ankle joint parameters, the data computed by the microcontroller will be shown on the personal computer (PC) through Bluetooth. Normal-gait and pregnant women are subjected to tests designed to detect gait variations. Compared to a normal gait, the center of pressure (COP) position stride of pregnant women tends to be medial-anterior, allowing for a pronation trend of the foot and a more dispersed center of pressure deviation as an indicator of lower gait stability and an increased risk of falling. Additionally, the gait of pregnant women exhibited a longer time per gait cycle and slower gait speed than normal gait. As an adaptation to maintain a stable gait balance, the lower extremity kinematics of pregnant women exhibited a propensity to decrease flexion and increase extension of the knee joint, as well as a tendency to decrease plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. Recommendations based on the results of the study show that the gait of pregnant women is more comfortable when using slippers than flip-flops and requires support for the lower extremities when sitting/sleeping.
