Abstract

The lack of motivation to engage in physical activity and explore the vast campus environment poses a unique challenge for the students at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). Although ITS has many iconic locations and facilities scattered throughout the campus, low interest and a sense of monotony in walking cause students to prefer using vehicles. This condition prevents students from interacting with the physical environment of their campus to the fullest extent possible. This application is expected to be a medium that is not only informative, but also able to provide motivation and an enjoyable experience for students to explore the campus environment. Based on these issues, the author developed a Web-based Augmented Reality (WebAR) application that integrates gamification elements with the RPG genre to motivate pedestrian exploration. This application utilizes Lightship Maps technology from 8th Wall to present a 3D world map that is synchronized with the user's movements in the real world. Statistical data and wayspot ownership are managed in real-time using a PostgreSQL database through the Supabase service. The turn-based combat system and random encounter mechanism are implemented using A-Frame and JavaScript to create an immersive exploration experience. The results of the test show that the ExpITS application provides a positive exploration experience and supports walking activities in the ITS campus environment. The iGEQ results showed a high level of comfort and understanding of the game, with sufficient challenges and immersive experiences without causing significant stress or negative experiences. The PGQ results also showed a positive overall experience with low levels of fatigue and discomfort. ExpITS successfully implemented the Mechanics, Dynamics, and Aesthetics (MDA) framework to support the exploration experience of the campus based on WebAR. Mechanics aspects such as the wayspot system, cooldown, random encounters, spells, and turn-based combat generate Dynamics such as active exploration, wayspot capture, player interaction with the campus environment, and encouragement to walk and explore the ITS campus area. These dynamics then generate the main Aesthetics of challenge, discovery, and immersion, providing an enjoyable gaming experience that supports exploration.
