Abstract

Child health is an important foundation for human capital development and long-term economic growth. However, East Java Province continues to experience increasing rates of child health complaints and hospitalization, indicating the need for a more contextual understanding of the socioeconomic factors influencing child health. At the same time, the phenomenon of population aging and the high prevalence of multigenerational households in East Java suggest that child health is shaped not only by maternal and child characteristics but also by the presence and condition of older adults within the household. This study aims to analyze the effects of socioeconomic determinants on child health and examine the moderating role of elderly independence in the relationship between maternal employment status and child health. The study employs a quantitative approach using logistic regression and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) based on the 2024 SUSENAS dataset. The sample consists of 571 observations from multigenerational households in East Java Province. The findings indicate that maternal employment status has a positive and statistically significant effect on child health (OR = 4.97; p = 0.037). Elderly independence also has a direct effect on child health and significantly moderates the relationship between maternal employment status and child health (OR = 2.11; p = 0.055; interaction OR = 0.144; p = 0.018). The average marginal effects show that maternal employment significantly increases the probability of children being healthy in households with non-independent older adults (dy/dx = 0.169; p = 0.011). Meanwhile, maternal education, per capita expenditure, area of residence, and maternal age do not have statistically significant effects on child health. These findings suggest that child health policies should be strengthened by taking into account the dynamics of multigenerational households and the care needs of older adults.
