Abstract

Roads are land transportation infrastructures that are based on the bottom soil layer. One type of basic soil is loamy soil which has the characteristics of high plasticity and soil shrinkage. These characteristics can result in a reduction in the age of the road plan. Therefore, soil stabilization needs to be carried out so that the age of the road plan can be achieved. Steps in soil improvement using fly ash have been done before by previous researchers, but generally repair materials still use low calcium fly ash (type F). This soil stabilization research focuses on the use of high calcium fly ash (type C) which is combined into a geopolymer as an environmentally friendly clay soil improvement material. This study tested the physical properties of the soil consisting of atterberg limit, sieve analysis, and hydrometer testing, as well as the mechanical properties of the soil consisting of standard proctor testing, unconfined compressive strength (UCT), and development potential test (swell potential test) with a total number of 16 samples. The geopolymer used consists of 70% high calcium fly ash (type C) with variations in levels of 10%, 20%, and 30% to the dry weight of the soil, and 30% alkaline activator with a ratio of 1: 1 in the form of NaOH 4M and Na2SiO3 solutions. Variations in the curing time in this study were determined for 1 day, 3 days, and 7 days. The results obtained after all tests showed that the optimum level of fly ash and curing time for the soil was 20% with a 7-day curing. This is evidenced by an increase in the percentage of soil dry volume weight by 2.89%, a decrease in optimum moisture content by 6.25%, a decrease in pore number by 6.61%, and a unconfined compressive strength value to 3.07 kg/cm2. In addition, the parameter indicating an improvement in soil characteristics is the low rate of subsidence. The initial soil condition displacement value modeled in the Plaxis v.21 Program is 26.26 mm. However, after stabilization, the smallest soil displacement occurred by 8.16 mm at the fly ash content and the optimum acidification time (decreased by 68.94%). The value of the security figures also increased, from the original 1.11 and/or 1.28 to 1.93 and/or 2.77 using the Plaxis V21 and Slope Stability programs respectively. This happens because after stabilization, there are geopolymer compounds that are formed so that they fill the pores due to the reaction of fly ash and alkaline activators.
