Abstract

Submarine gas is an active geological process that shapes distinctive seafloor morphology and alters sediment characteristics. This study aims to compare seafloor morphology and sediment distribution between potential and non-potential gas zones in the Weh Basin, Aceh. Raw data from a Kongsberg EM304 Multibeam Echosounder (MBES), acquired in May 2024, were processed using Bathymetric Position Index (BPI) for morphological structure classification and Angular Response Analysis (ARA) for acoustic-based sediment classification. Pearson correlation analysis was applied to quantify the relationship between backscatter intensity and sediment grain size. Results reveal significant morphological contrasts between the two zones. The Gas area was identified as a Submarine Ridge at depths of −58 m to −2,318 m, with slopes exceeding 45° and a maximum rugosity of 0.3, while the non-gas area was classified as a Seamount at depths between −1,854 m and −3,528 m. ARA sediment classification identified three classes in the gas zone (rock, sand, and silt) and two classes in the non-gas zone (rock and sand), achieving an overall accuracy of 86.7% and a Cohen's Kappa of 0.444. Backscatter–Wentworth phi correlation analysis yielded a strong negative relationship in the seepage zone (R² = 0.603; r = −0.777) and a very strong negative relationship in the non-seepage zone (R² = 0.761; r = −0.872), confirming that gas activity distorts the acoustic–sediment relationship. These findings demonstrate that integrating BPI and ARA is effective for deep-sea mapping, while underscoring the limitations of ARA under complex topographic conditions.
