Abstract

Penggunaan biomassa pada pembakaran bersama batubara (co-firing) pada PLTU saat ini telah banyak diterapkan pada pembangkit eksisting. Hal ini bertujuan untuk menurunkan emisi karbon yang dihasilkan dari proses pembangkitan listrik. Indonesia memiliki potensi limbah biomassa yang melimpah dari sektor perkebunan kelapa sawit yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai sumber bahan bakar terbarukan. Pada umumnya, biomassa memiliki nilai kalori yang rendah dan sulit untuk peran batubara sebagai sumber bahan bakar boiler. Studi ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan nilai kalori biomasa menggunakan proses torefaksi oksidatif dan melalui mekanisme pencampuran (berbagai jenis biomasa sawit) bertujuan untuk menurunkan resiko slagging dan aglomerasi. Setiap parameter penyiapan bahan dilakukan iterasi untuk mendapatkan produk biomassa dengan nilai kalori tinggi dan kadar total alkali rendah. Selanjutnya biomassa produk torefaksi dilakukan pengujian pembakaran co-firing rasio tinggi dengan batubara kualitas rendah. Parameter studi ditentukan oleh morfologi abu dan observasi unsur yang diamati dari abu hasil co-firing menggunakan tungku Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB). Temuan studi ini ditujukan untuk memberikan rekomendasi parameter studi eksperimental untuk peningkatan kualitas biomasa melalui torefaksi oksidatif dengan rendah resiko permasalahan penempelan abu.

The use of biomass in coal co-firing at coal-fired power plants is currently widely implemented in existing facilities. This is aimed at reducing carbon emissions generated from the electricity generation process. Indonesia has an abundant supply of biomass waste from the oil palm plantation sector that can be utilized as a renewable fuel source. Generally, biomass has a low calorific value and is difficult to use as a boiler fuel in place of coal. This study aims to increase the calorific value of biomass using an oxidative torrefaction process and, through a blending mechanism (various types of oil palm biomass), aims to reduce the risk of slagging and agglomeration. Each feedstock preparation parameter was iterated to obtain biomass products with high calorific value and low total alkali content. Subsequently, the torrefied biomass products were tested in high-ratio co-firing with low-quality coal. The study parameters were determined based on ash morphology and elemental analysis of the ash resulting from co-firing using a Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) furnace. The findings of this study are intended to provide recommendations for experimental parameters to improve biomass quality through oxidative torrefaction while minimizing the risk of ash adhesion issues.
