Abstract

Pembangunan Jalan Tol Trans Sumatera Ruas Betung (Sp.

The construction of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road, Betung (Sp. Sekayu)–Tempino–Jambi Section 4, encountered geotechnical problems marked by embankment failure at STA 156+500–156+575. This condition indicates that the initial treatment proposed in the Final Engineering Design (FED), namely the stripping method, was not fully sufficient to address the soil characteristics at the study location. Therefore, an evaluation of alternative soil improvement methods is required to ensure embankment stability and performance.
This study employed a quantitative approach using Finite Element Method-based numerical analysis through geotechnical software. The analysis utilized bore log data, Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Cone Penetration Test (CPTu), laboratory soil testing results, seismic data, and the Final Engineering Design (FED). The evaluated soil improvement alternatives consisted of 3 m Soil Substitution + Preloading, 3 m Soil Substitution + 2 m Geofoam, and the Pile Slab method. Their performances were assessed based on settlement, safety factor, and structural capacity.
The results indicate that the existing FED design produced a settlement of 7.7 cm after both one and ten years, which did not satisfy the allowable deformation criteria, although the Safety Factor values of 1.70 under pseudostatic conditions and 1.53 under seismic conditions remained above the minimum requirement. The 3 m Soil Substitution + Preloading alternative demonstrated the most balanced performance, producing only 2 cm of settlement with Safety Factor values of 1.70 under pseudostatic conditions and 1.65 under seismic conditions. The 3 m Soil Substitution + 2 m Geofoam alternative resulted in 6 cm of settlement with Safety Factor values of 1.90 under both pseudostatic and seismic conditions. The Pile Slab method provided the best overall performance, with maximum bending moments of 250 kNm and 161.1 kNm, both below the allowable limit of 251.3 kNm, and a Safety Factor of 2.00 under both loading conditions. These findings show that the Pile Slab method is the most effective alternative for satisfying both settlement and embankment stability requirements at the study location.
