Abstract

The internship was conducted at PT Energi Agro Nusantara (EAN), Mojokerto, an Indonesian company specializing in molasses-based bioethanol production with a production capacity of 100 kL/day. The internship aimed to enhance the understanding of bioethanol manufacturing processes, utility systems, quality control, and the application of chemical engineering principles in solving industrial problems through a troubleshooting study. During the internship, observations were carried out on the fermentation, refinery, utility, and wastewater treatment units. In addition, a Process Flow Diagram (PFD), Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), mass balance, energy balance, and Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) analysis were developed to support process evaluation. The troubleshooting study focused on caramelization-induced fouling in the Plate and Frame Heat Exchanger (PHE) used in the fermented wash and spent wash process streams. Heat transfer and fluid mechanics calculations were performed to determine the required heat transfer area, the number of plates, and the pressure drop under actual operating conditions. The results indicated that the required heat transfer area was 99.34 m², requiring 155 plates to achieve the desired thermal performance. Furthermore, operational parameters affecting fouling formation were evaluated to formulate technical recommendations for improving heat exchanger performance. The proposed recommendations include optimizing operating temperature and flow rate, implementing periodic Cleaning-in-Place (CIP), and continuously monitoring process parameters to minimize caramelization and fouling formation. Overall, the internship provided comprehensive insight into industrial bioethanol production, the integration of fermentation and refining processes, and the practical application of chemical engineering concepts to real industrial challenges. The findings are expected to contribute to improving heat transfer efficiency, reducing fouling occurrence, and supporting the sustainable operation of bioethanol production at PT Energi Agro Nusantara.
