Abstract

Heat exchanger merupakan peralatan penting dalam proses pengeringan dolomit di PT Magnesium Gosari Internasional karena berfungsi mentransfer panas hasil pembakaran kayu ke udara pengering yang digunakan pada Vertical Roll Mill (VRM). Kinerja heat exchanger yang menurun akibat fouling dapat menyebabkan berkurangnya efisiensi perpindahan panas, meningkatnya konsumsi energi, serta menurunkan kualitas produk yang dihasilkan. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan kegiatan troubleshooting untuk mengevaluasi kinerja heat exchanger berdasarkan nilai fouling factor dan memberikan rekomendasi perbaikan yang sesuai. Metode yang digunakan meliputi pengumpulan data desain dan data operasional aktual, kemudian dilakukan perhitungan parameter perpindahan panas menggunakan metode Kern. Parameter yang dianalisis meliputi koefisien perpindahan panas menyeluruh (overall heat transfer coefficient) dan fouling factor sebagai indikator tingkat pengotoran pada permukaan perpindahan panas. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa nilai koefisien perpindahan panas menyeluruh aktual (Uc) sebesar 4,6477 Btu/jam·ft²·°F, lebih rendah dibandingkan nilai desain (Ud) sebesar 6,41 Btu/jam·ft²·°F. Selain itu, diperoleh nilai fouling factor aktual sebesar 0,059 jam·ft²·°F/Btu, jauh lebih tinggi dibandingkan nilai desain sebesar 0,002 jam·ft²·°F/Btu. Kondisi tersebut mengindikasikan terjadinya akumulasi deposit berupa abu pembakaran, kerak, dan partikel halus pada permukaan tube yang menyebabkan meningkatnya hambatan perpindahan panas. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, metode pembersihan yang selama ini menggunakan plant air dinilai kurang efektif sehingga direkomendasikan penambahan metode chemical cleaning untuk mengurangi fouling dan memulihkan kinerja heat exchanger. Implementasi rekomendasi tersebut diharapkan mampu meningkatkan efisiensi energi dan menjaga kualitas proses pengeringan dolomit secara berkelanjutan.

The heat exchanger is a critical unit in the dolomite drying process at PT Magnesium Gosari Internasional, as it transfers heat generated from wood combustion to the drying air supplied to the Vertical Roll Mill (VRM). A decline in heat exchanger performance due to fouling can reduce heat transfer efficiency, increase energy consumption, and adversely affect product quality. Therefore, a troubleshooting study was conducted to evaluate the heat exchanger performance based on the fouling factor and to propose appropriate corrective actions. The method applied in this study involved collecting both design data and actual operating data, followed by heat transfer calculations using the Kern method. The parameters analyzed included the overall heat transfer coefficient and the fouling factor as indicators of surface contamination on the heat transfer area. The evaluation results showed that the actual overall heat transfer coefficient (Uc) was 4.6477 Btu/h·ft²·°F, which was lower than the design value (Ud) of 6.41 Btu/h·ft²·°F. In addition, the actual fouling factor was 0.059 h·ft²·°F/Btu, significantly higher than the design value of 0.002 h·ft²·°F/Btu. These results indicate the accumulation of combustion ash, scale, and fine particles on the tube surface, which increased thermal resistance and reduced heat transfer performance. Based on the analysis, the current cleaning method using plant air was considered insufficient, and chemical cleaning was recommended to reduce fouling and restore heat exchanger performance. The implementation of this recommendation is expected to improve energy efficiency and maintain the sustainability of the dolomite drying process.
