Abstract

Plywood adhesive manufacturing commonly uses flour as a formaldehyde resin extender to improve cost efficiency and adhesive performance. This study evaluated the effect of porang flour purity (industrial grade and food grade) as a resin extender on adhesive characteristics and interior plywood quality. The analyses included pH, moisture content, ash content, viscosity, formaldehyde emission, bonding strength, and delamination according to the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS). The results showed that industrial-grade porang flour had a pH of 6.31, moisture content of 8.24%, ash content of 7.72%, and a viscosity increase of 1.36 times. The resulting plywood exhibited a formaldehyde emission of 0.158 mg/L, bonding strength of 0.72 N/mm², and passed the JAS delamination test. Compared with food-grade porang flour, industrial-grade porang produced a more stable adhesive system, lower formaldehyde emission, and stronger bonding performance, indicating its potential as an effective extender for plywood adhesive applications.
